Moving from technical expert to people leader requires a change in how success is defined: achievement increasingly depends on what others can accomplish. Beveridge encourages leaders to add coaching, development and delegation; retain technical credibility, quality standards and curiosity; and let go of needing to be the expert on everything or doing work themselves because it seems faster. The foundation is clarity: people need to understand both why their work matters and what their role requires. These principles apply to influencing others even without formal management responsibility.
Delegation is presented as an investment in capability, with leaders encouraged to allow for an initial learning period rather than immediately reclaiming work. Effective delegation means defining outcomes, matching risk to skill, agreeing check-ins, allowing time for learning, preserving ownership and debriefing afterwards. Trust strengthens this process through human connection and reliable delivery: leaders should listen, explain their reasoning, address difficult issues early and back their people. Coaching further develops independence by asking questions that help people identify their own options and solutions.
Leaders also need to create conditions in which motivation can flourish. Drawing on self-determination theory, Beveridge highlights autonomy, competence and relatedness: people benefit from choice in how they work, opportunities to develop and feel effective, and a sense of care and belonging. Practical actions include protecting learning time, recognising progress and using one-on-ones to discuss development, wellbeing and aspirations alongside work. The webinar closes by encouraging participants to choose concrete actions, such as delegating a development opportunity, practising coaching questions or strengthening a trust-building behaviour.
